How do I get my cat to tolerate brushing?
Keep sessions short (one to two minutes at first), pick a calm time (after a meal, when she’s already relaxed), use a soft slicker brush with light pressure, and pair the session with a treat or piece of wet food at the end so she comes to associate the brush with something good. Brush with the grain of the coat, not against. Stop before she’s annoyed, not after; ending while she’s still tolerating it preserves the routine. Some cats prefer a grooming glove or a soft baby brush over a metal slicker, especially at first.
When to call a vet: if your cat reacts with pain rather than annoyance (cries, snaps, hides), the issue may be skin pain, not preference. See your vet.
