Ceramic, stainless or plastic: what’s the best water bowl for cats?

Wide, shallow and either ceramic or stainless steel. Skip plastic. The shape matters more than the brand: a deep narrow bowl presses whiskers against the rim, which some cats find uncomfortable enough to avoid drinking. A wide, shallow dish lets a cat drink without that contact. On material, plastic scratches over time and the scratches hold bacteria; some cats also seem to dislike the taste plastic gives water. Ceramic and stainless steel clean better and hold no flavor. Heavy ceramic bowls also tip over less if your cat is a paw-dipper. Whatever you pick, wash it daily. That matters more than material.

When to call a vet: if your cat consistently avoids a clean, well-placed bowl regardless of material, mention it at her next vet visit.
