Why is my cat’s poop runny or loose?

Most often it’s dietary: a recent food change, a new treat, dairy, or eating something unusual. Cats are sensitive to abrupt changes in protein source and carbohydrate type. Less common causes: intestinal parasites (especially in cats with outdoor access or in young kittens), inflammatory bowel disease, bacterial overgrowth, or stress. One day of loose stool in an otherwise-well cat usually resolves on its own; back off to the previous food, give her time. More than a day, especially with vomiting or lethargy, is worth a vet visit.

When to call a vet: diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours, any blood or mucus in stool, or diarrhea alongside vomiting, lethargy or appetite loss — vet.
