How often should I brush my cat?
Daily for long-haired cats (Ragdolls, Maine Coons, Persians), once or twice a week for short-haired cats, and more often during heavy-shed periods regardless of length. A two-minute daily session beats a fifteen-minute weekly one: it stays short enough that the cat tolerates it, removes hair before it ends up swallowed or on furniture, and prevents mats from forming in the first place. Senior cats with arthritis often need more help on the lower back and rump (where they can’t reach), even if their coat used to be self-managed.
When to call a vet: if your cat has suddenly become intolerant of brushing she used to accept, something has changed (skin pain, dental pain, arthritis). Mention it to your vet.
