Why is my cat’s nose dry or crusty?
A dry nose by itself is not a reliable sign of illness in cats, despite the old idea that a wet nose means health. Nose moisture naturally rises and falls through the day with grooming, sleep and the humidity in the room. Crusting, cracking, scabbing or a nose that looks raw is a different matter and can point to sunburn on a light-colored nose, an allergic reaction, a viral infection or, less commonly, an autoimmune skin condition. The texture and any accompanying symptoms (appetite, energy, breathing) tell you far more than dryness alone ever will.
When to call a vet: Crusting, scabbing or bleeding on the nose is worth a vet visit; simple dryness with a cat that seems otherwise well usually is not.
