Can I add water to dry cat food?
Yes, and it’s a simple way to boost hydration without switching foods. A tablespoon or two of warm (not hot) water stirred into kibble makes the meal softer, more aromatic and adds water along the way. Some cats take to it immediately; others need a slow ramp, so start with a small splash and increase over a week. Don’t leave a watery bowl out for hours; kibble softens, bacteria grow faster and unfinished food spoils. If your cat ignores it, try canned food alongside instead. The goal is more water through meals, not a particular method.
When to call a vet: if you’re adding water because your cat suddenly seems thirsty or off her food, mention the change to your vet.
