How do I get a mat out of my cat’s fur?
For a small mat, a wide-tooth metal comb plus patience usually does it: hold the hair close to the skin so you’re not pulling the skin every time the comb catches, and work the comb through the mat from the outside edge inward, one small bite at a time. Cornstarch or a detangling spray can help. Big or tight mats (anywhere the comb won’t move through after several minutes of gentle work) need a professional groomer with clippers. Skip the kitchen scissors. Cat skin is thin and floppy and lifts with the mat; the most common emergency vet visit related to mats is a scissor cut to the skin.
When to call a vet: if a mat is hot, weepy or smelly, or the skin underneath is red or irritated, see your vet — there’s likely a skin issue under the coat.
