How do I read a cat food label?

Start with the AAFCO statement, usually in small print on the back. It tells you whether the food is complete and balanced and for which life stage, which is the single most important thing on the bag. Then scan the ingredient list, where named animal proteins near the top are a good sign for an obligate carnivore. The guaranteed analysis gives minimum protein and fat and maximum fiber and moisture, useful for comparing foods. Marketing words on the front like premium, natural or grain-free aren’t regulated the way that AAFCO line is.
