Why does my cat strain in the litter box but nothing comes out?
Two possibilities, and which one matters a lot. The first is constipation, where stool is stuck. The second is a urinary issue, which in male cats can mean a blocked urethra. A urinary blockage in a male cat is a true emergency and can be fatal within 24 to 48 hours. Watch the box closely: is any urine being produced? Any stool? Is your cat in clear discomfort, vocalizing, hiding or repeatedly returning to the box? Those signs lean urinary. A male cat producing nothing should go to an emergency vet immediately.
When to call a vet: male cat straining and producing nothing — emergency vet now. Female cat straining 24 hours or more, or any cat with blood — vet today.
