Do calming collars work for cats?

Mixed evidence and a safety concern. Pheromone collars work on the same principle as diffusers (releasing synthetic feline pheromones), but the evidence base for the collar format is much thinner than for diffusers. The PLOS One 2023 study showing modest scratching reduction was a diffuser study.[1] The collar format also raises a safety concern: collars in general are a strangulation risk for cats who climb, so any collar should be a quick-release breakaway design. For most anxious or stressed indoor cats, a pheromone diffuser has more evidence behind it and no neck-collar risk.

When to call a vet: if your cat needs ongoing anti-anxiety support, see your vet. Diffusers and collars are mild interventions, and persistent anxiety can need more.
