How do I reduce cat dander in my apartment?

Three moves do most of the work. First, brush the cat regularly (daily for long-haired, weekly for short-haired): brushing removes loose hair and dander before it ends up on furniture. Second, HEPA air filtration in the rooms the allergic person spends the most time in, especially the bedroom — true-HEPA filters are the standard and a unit sized for the room is more useful than a small one in a large space. Third, wash soft furnishings on a weekly cycle: cat-favorite blankets, cat beds, throw pillow covers. Bathing the cat doesn’t help nearly as much as people think, and the effect lasts only a few days.
