Are omega-3 supplements safe for cats?
Generally yes at appropriate doses. The most common side effects are GI upset (vomiting, soft stool), especially when starting too fast or adding fish oil to a higher-fat diet. At high doses fish oil can affect blood clotting, which is why cats with bleeding disorders, those on certain medications, and those scheduled for surgery should pause supplementation per their vet’s guidance. Bauer 2011 in JAVMA reviews the therapeutic applications and the dosing considerations.[1] Pick a veterinary-grade product with declared EPA + DHA content per dose; the pet-store market is variable in actual content.
When to call a vet: before starting omega-3 in a cat with kidney disease, pancreatitis or any clotting issue. Also if your cat develops vomiting or diarrhea after starting.
