Is coconut oil safe for cats’ skin?

Small amounts applied to the skin are generally safe for cats but the case for using it is weak. The viral wellness claims (coconut oil cures dandruff, treats hot spots, prevents fleas) aren’t backed by veterinary evidence. Most cats will lick it off, which means oral ingestion, and large amounts orally cause GI upset (diarrhea, vomiting) and can contribute to weight gain since it’s pure fat. If your cat has skin issues that you want to address, see your vet first to identify the underlying cause. A targeted treatment is more useful than a pantry remedy.

When to call a vet: if your cat develops vomiting, diarrhea or any reaction after coconut oil exposure, or if the skin issue you’re trying to fix doesn’t resolve in a week, see your vet.
