Why is my cat’s fur changing color as she gets older?

A gradual lightening or graying, especially around the muzzle and face, is a normal part of aging in cats, the same way hair grays in people, and it is most noticeable in darker-coated cats. Certain breeds and colorpoint patterns (like Siamese) can also darken or shift shade with age or in response to body temperature, which is a different, harmless mechanism tied to the enzyme that produces their coat pigment. What is worth flagging is a sudden change over weeks rather than a slow shift over years, or color change paired with a change in coat texture or shedding, since that combination is more likely tied to a health issue than to normal aging.
