Why does my cat stare at a blank wall?

Most of the time this is your cat noticing something you genuinely cannot: a moving shadow, a faint sound behind the drywall, a bug or a reflection shifting with the light. Cat hearing and peripheral motion detection are both sharper than a person’s, so a wall that looks blank to you can be full of small stimuli to her. A brief stare that ends on its own, especially followed by normal behavior, is not a concern. Prolonged, repetitive staring at nothing detectable, especially in an older cat, combined with disorientation or vocalizing, is a different and less common pattern worth mentioning to a vet.
