Can dehydration cause urinary problems in cats?

Low water intake is a real risk factor for feline urinary issues. When a cat is chronically under-hydrated her urine grows more concentrated, which makes it easier for crystals and stones to form and feeds the broader picture of lower urinary tract disease. Indoor cats on dry food are especially prone, since they get little moisture from their diet. Boosting water intake with wet food, extra water stations and a fountain if she likes one all help dilute the urine. Straining, frequent trips or blood in the urine is an emergency.

When to call a vet: Straining to urinate, going very often or producing little or no urine is an emergency, especially in male cats. See a vet immediately.
