What home remedies actually help with cat constipation?
Four moves do most of the work. First, more wet food: canned is at least 75 percent water versus 6 to 10 percent for kibble. Second, more water stations, placed away from food and the litter box. Third, a teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin a couple of times a week for soluble fiber. Fourth, more play to stimulate colon motility. Skip over-the-counter laxatives, mineral oil and human stool softeners unless your vet has specifically OK’d them. Some of those interact badly with cats.
When to call a vet: if 48 hours pass with no stool, your cat is straining without producing, or you see blood, the home moves are not enough.
