What’s whisker fatigue, and does it affect my cat’s drinking?
Whiskers are sensitive sensors, and pressing them against the sides of a deep narrow bowl can bother some cats enough that they avoid drinking from it. The phenomenon is informally called whisker fatigue, though it isn’t a recognized medical diagnosis and there isn’t strong research behind it. Plenty of cats drink fine from any bowl. But for cats who paw at the water, drink in awkward postures or knock over the bowl, switching to a wide, shallow dish often fixes it: same water, same spot, no whisker contact. A shallow dish costs less than a fountain and is worth trying first if the symptoms fit.
When to call a vet: if your cat avoids food and water in any bowl, regardless of shape, see a vet, since dental pain or other oral issues can look like a whisker problem.
